During the Civil War, the United States government commissioned the new Devereux Station on the important Orange & Alexandria Railroad line. This was part of President Abraham Lincoln’s plan to build up railroads in Virginia to help secure the nation during the war.
A passenger station was built in 1870 and the name was changed from Devereux Station to Clifton Station because there already existed another station named Devereux Station. With easy train access from Washington DC, Clifton became an important commercial and resort community. Three US presidents stayed at the Cliffton Hotel, once a popular summer resort. The Clifton Historic District is home to three churches that date back to the early 1900s. The oldest building in the district is the Clifton Baptist Church, which was built in 1910. In addition to being a house of worship, the building served as a schoolhouse and later as a library. The third building in the district is St. John's Episcopal Church, which was completed in 1887. Gilbert Vanderhoef built this house in 1720. He lived here with his wife, Margaretta Westervelt, and their five children. Their son, John, became the first mayor of Clifton.
The family operated a mill nearby. The house served as a working gristmill for many decades. After the death of Gilbert Vanderhoef in 1802, the house passed to his daughter, Margaret. She married Isaac Westervelt in 1807. They had six sons and one daughter.
In 1838, the house was sold to Jacobus Van Rensselaer. His descendants owned the property until 1946. In 1947, the city purchased the house.
Today, visitors can admire the architecture of the Vanderhoef-Westervelt House. Visitors are welcome to tour the house, learn about the history of Clifton, and explore the grounds.

Burnet Woods is a city parks located in the West End neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. It contains 89.3 acres of land, making it one of the largest public parks in the state. It is owned and operated by the City of Cincinnati Parks department.
